Canadian Invoicing FAQ
When do I need to register for GST/HST?
You must register if your worldwide taxable revenue exceeds $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters or in a single quarter. Below this threshold, registration is optional but may be beneficial if you want to claim input tax credits.
What's the difference between GST, HST, and PST?
GST (5%) is the federal tax that applies across Canada. HST is a combined federal-provincial tax used in Ontario, Atlantic provinces, and others. PST is a separate provincial tax charged in BC, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Quebec has its own QST system.
Do I need to show GST and PST separately on invoices?
In provinces with separate PST (BC, SK, MB), you should show GST and PST as separate line items. For HST provinces, show the combined HST amount. This helps customers claim input tax credits correctly.
How do I invoice customers in different provinces?
For services, charge based on where the service is performed. For goods, charge based on the delivery location. Our generator lets you set the appropriate tax rate for each invoice based on your customer's province.
What records do I need to keep for CRA?
Keep all invoices, receipts, and supporting documents for at least 6 years. This includes sales invoices, purchase receipts, and bank statements. Digital copies are acceptable as long as they're readable and accurate.
Can I invoice in both English and French?
Yes, our invoice generator supports both official languages. For Quebec clients especially, having French invoices is appreciated and sometimes required for government contracts.
