US Sales Tax Support

State Sales Tax
45 states have sales tax ranging from 2.9% (Colorado) to 7.25% (California).
No Sales Tax States
5 states have no sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon.
Local Taxes
Many cities and counties add local sales tax on top of state rates.
Sales Tax for Services
Most US states don't tax services, only tangible goods. However, some states tax specific services. If you're selling services, you may not need to charge sales tax at all. Check your state's rules or consult a tax professional.

US Invoicing FAQ
Do I need to charge sales tax on my invoices?
It depends on what you sell and where. Physical products shipped within states with sales tax typically require it. Most services are exempt. If you have "nexus" (business presence) in a state, you may need to collect that state's tax. Consult a tax professional for your specific situation.
What's the difference between an invoice and a receipt?
An invoice is a request for payment sent before or after services are rendered. A receipt confirms payment has been received. Our generator creates invoices; once paid, you can mark them as paid to serve as a receipt record.
Do I need an EIN to create invoices?
Not necessarily. Sole proprietors can use their SSN. However, an EIN (Employer Identification Number) is free from the IRS and keeps your SSN private. It's required if you have employees or operate as an LLC/corporation.
How long should I keep invoice records?
The IRS recommends keeping tax records for at least 3 years, but 7 years is safer for audit protection. Keep all invoices, whether paid or unpaid, as they document your income.
Can I invoice international clients?
Yes! When invoicing international clients, you typically don't charge US sales tax. You can invoice in USD or other currencies. Be aware of any tax treaties between the US and your client's country.
What payment terms are standard in the US?
Net 30 (payment due in 30 days) is most common. Net 15 is used for faster payment, and Net 60 for larger corporate clients. You can also offer early payment discounts like "2/10 Net 30" (2% discount if paid in 10 days).
