Your details
Your business or personal name, address and contact details, plus a tax number if you have one.
Who paid
The name and address of the person or business that paid you.
Receipt number and date
A unique number and the date you received the money, so you can find it later.
What was paid for
The items or services, with quantities, prices and any tax shown separately.
Amount and payment method
The total paid and whether it was cash, card or bank transfer.
Notes
Anything that explains the payment, such as the rental period or which invoice it settles.

Is the receipt template really free?
Yes. The Word and Excel files are free to download and use, and you do not need an account.
What is the difference between a receipt and an invoice?
An invoice asks for payment. A receipt confirms that payment has been made. If the money has already been paid, you need a receipt.
Does the Excel receipt template do the maths?
Yes. Enter the quantity and price on each line and it works out the line totals, the discount, the tax and the total paid. Change the tax rate cell to suit you.
Can I use these in Google Docs or Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the file to Google Drive and open it with Docs or Sheets. Check the layout after opening it, because small differences can appear.
Should a receipt show tax?
If you charge tax, show it as a separate line so the buyer can see it. The rules on what a receipt must contain differ by country, so check with your tax authority or accountant.
