VAT and invoices in Bangladesh

Whether you charge VAT depends on your annual turnover. According to the National Board of Revenue (NBR):

  • Annual turnover of BDT 30 lakh or less: no VAT to pay.
  • Over BDT 30 lakh and up to 50 lakh: 3% turnover tax instead of VAT.
  • Over BDT 50 lakh: VAT registration, with VAT at the standard rate of 15%.

VAT-registered businesses must issue the NBR's prescribed tax invoice, Mushak-6.3, for taxable supplies in Bangladesh. A Zap Bill invoice does not replace Mushak-6.3 — it is ideal for businesses below the VAT threshold, for invoicing international clients, and for quotes and payment records.

Thresholds from NBR guidance. Tax rules change with each budget — check with the NBR or a tax adviser for your situation.

What to include on your invoice

  • Your name or business name, address and contact details
  • Your BIN (Business Identification Number) if you are VAT-registered
  • Your client's name and address
  • A unique invoice number, the invoice date and the due date
  • A description of the work or goods, with quantities and prices
  • The total, the currency, and how to pay (bank or mobile banking details)

Invoicing in Bangladesh: FAQs

Can I create an invoice in taka?

Yes. Choose BDT as the invoice currency and all amounts are shown in taka, formatted as Tk 1,500.00. You can set BDT as your default currency in your profile.

Can I invoice foreign clients in US dollars?

Yes. Each invoice has its own currency, so you can bill overseas clients in USD, GBP, EUR or another supported currency while billing local clients in taka.

Do I need to charge VAT on my invoices?

Only if your turnover requires it. Under NBR guidance, businesses with annual turnover up to BDT 30 lakh pay no VAT, those between 30 and 50 lakh pay 3% turnover tax, and those above 50 lakh register for VAT at the standard 15% rate.

What is Mushak-6.3?

Mushak-6.3 is the tax invoice prescribed by the NBR that VAT-registered businesses must issue for taxable supplies in Bangladesh. If you are VAT-registered, use Mushak-6.3 for those sales.

Is the invoice generator free?

Yes. You can create an invoice without an account, and a free account gives you 3 invoices every month. Unlimited invoices cost $9.99 a month.
